These features along with other components such as top plate modifications and styles make the roller dolly versatile. A roller dolly is short in stature. It is typically less than 3ft in height. Some may be larger depending upon the capacity and the load which the rigging dolly may be designed to carry. Top plates, which are textured plates that can be placed or embedded on the top of the roller dolly, may add a small amount of height to the roller dolly, but not very by much. Some of the different types of top plates for a rigging dolly are the steel grid plate, padded plate, and the smooth plate.

The steel grid plate has hard, spike like grids. Theses grids on this particular roller dolly makes it easy to keep wood based loads secure during movement. The wood or crated material is able to be kept secure because the simulated spike grids on the rigging dolly tightly grip into the wood. Next is the padded top plate. The padded top plate of a roller dolly is typically used when the load that is being transported is metal based or has some type of smooth or slippery. The pad on the roller dolly serves as a non-slip support for the equipment. The other type of roller dolly top plate is the smooth top plate. The primary purpose of the smooth top plate is to add other interchangeable top plates. The top plates on the roller dolly are mad for modification and can be switched out depending the application the roller dolly will be employed.
